This is a fixed-term leave replacement position at the UBC Okanagan Campus in Kelowna, British Columbia. Under the general supervision of the Manager, Custodial and Waste Services, you will provide essential maintenance, custodial, and office moving services across campus buildings and grounds.
You will report directly to the Facilities Services Coordinator and work closely with other Facilities Management staff, event organisers, and the broader campus community, including students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Key Responsibilities
Your duties will include providing maintenance services such as completing minor repairs and renovations to buildings, furniture, and equipment. You will perform interior and exterior lighting maintenance, minor painting, and install building way-finding signage, window frosting, and temporary signage. This role also involves installing and replacing ceiling tiles and carpet tiles.
You will be responsible for exterior campus maintenance, including snow removal from steps and walkways, applying de-icing products, and completing spring clean-up. You will pressure wash building exteriors and campus grounds, perform exterior window cleaning, and install or remove wall fixtures like whiteboards and artwork. Regular inspections of campus grounds for fire hazards and misuse, reporting major maintenance needs, and responding to building emergencies such as floods are also key aspects of this role.
Custodial services support involves repairing washroom fixtures, assisting in dispatching custodians for on-demand work, and coordinating cleaning for events during operational and non-operational hours. You will maintain campus grounds and parking lots by removing garbage, recycling, litter, and addressing wildlife issues. Supporting campus sustainability initiatives through daily waste pick-up, graffiti removal, and installing/maintaining exterior building signage are also part of your responsibilities.
You will perform office, laboratory, and equipment moves and set-ups for campus events, assembling and rearranging furniture and equipment. This includes moving large or heavy items using mechanical lifting equipment like skid steers and golf carts. You will also assist the IT department by disconnecting and reconnecting equipment during basic office moves, following written instructions.
Communication is key, requiring the use of computers, radios, and cell phones to stay in contact with department administration and colleagues, provide work updates, and use systems like Archibus, Harvest, and Outlook. You will also perform pest control duties and contribute to maintaining a positive campus image by assisting visitors and upholding UBC uniform standards.
What You'll Bring
You must have completed Grade 12 or equivalent, possess over three years of experience, preferably in a trades environment, and hold a Class 5 Driver’s Licence. A willingness to respect diverse perspectives and a commitment to enhancing awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion are essential.
Additional academic, technical, or vocational training is considered an asset, as is previous work in a unionised educational institution. Experience with rope access and knowledge of driving equipment such as bobcats, tractors, and UTVs are also beneficial. You should be able to operate hand and power tools and learn to drive material handling equipment.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
This role requires the ability to perform strenuous physical work daily, including assuming uncomfortable or awkward working positions and lifting and carrying up to 50lbs regularly. You must be able to work safely at heights and in areas with higher noise levels, using proper hearing protection.
The position involves working in seasonal extreme conditions frequently, including outdoors in extreme cold with snow and ice in winter, as well as extreme heat in summer. You will also work in confined areas and sustain long periods of bending over.
