About the role

The Krembil Brain Institute at University Health Network (UHN) and the University of Toronto invite applications for the prestigious Cheng Family Chair in Epilepsy Research. This significant academic appointment is for a five-year term, with potential for a single renewal for an additional five years, contingent upon a successful performance review and continued funding. The successful candidate will hold a pivotal role in advancing epilepsy research within a world-class academic and clinical environment.

This Chair position comes with substantial support, providing $1 million in funding over the initial five-year term. This funding is specifically allocated to support the Chairholder’s salary and critical research activities, enabling impactful contributions to the field of epilepsy.

Key duties

• Undertake collaborative research and promote discovery, treatment, and education in genetic epilepsy.
• Pursue the development of effective treatments for generalized epilepsy syndromes, including Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME), also known as Janz Syndrome.
• Leverage all enabling tools to advance the area of epilepsy research and ensure knowledge translation efforts are integrated into the work.
• Through research and scholarly activities, help position the Krembil Brain Institute as a global leader in knowledge generation and translation in the area of epilepsies.
• Provide teaching and supervision to medical trainees, fellows, and graduate students.

Who we're looking for

We are seeking an internationally renowned clinician scientist with a profound commitment to epilepsy research. The successful candidate will possess a distinguished track record in clinical expertise and innovative research, ready to lead and inspire within our dynamic academic and clinical setting.

• Must be a Neurologist.
• Eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Full Professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology.
• Eligible to hold a clinician scientist position based at UHN-Krembil Brain Institute.
• Hold an MD degree.
• Hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
• Hold certification in Neurology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or international equivalent.
• Have an established clinical research program in Epilepsy with a strong genetic component.
• Possess an established reputation of clinical expertise and be internationally renowned.
• Demonstrate a track record of conducting high quality innovative and impactful clinical research focused on patients with rare genetic epilepsies and common epilepsies with a strong genetic component.
• Exhibit excellent collaboration, communication, and leadership skills, with demonstrated experience.
