Sleep Country Canada is seeking a Cloud Operations Lead to play a critical role in overseeing the performance, reliability, and security of the organisation’s cloud infrastructure. This role drives operational excellence through proactive monitoring, incident management, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will lead a team to enhance efficiency, optimise costs, and adopt innovative cloud technologies in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will oversee and manage the organisation’s cloud infrastructure, potentially across multiple public cloud platforms, to ensure high availability, optimal performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency. You will develop and maintain standard operating procedures for cloud services and monitor resource utilisation to meet service level objectives while controlling costs. This position ensures reliable 24/7 operations of critical cloud-based systems and services, leading the incident management process for cloud operations by coordinating rapid response to service disruptions, performing root cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions. You will also maintain robust disaster recovery and business continuity plans for cloud platforms to minimise downtime and data loss. You will lead and mentor the Cloud Operations team, providing day-to-day direction, technical guidance, and performance management, while planning and prioritising team activities and fostering a culture of high performance, continuous learning, and adaptability. Collaboration with cross-functional teams such as Software Development, Security, Architecture, and vendors is essential to align cloud operations with business needs, upcoming projects, and new technologies. You will drive continuous improvement of cloud operational processes through automation and innovation, championing DevOps/SRE best practices like CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and configuration management to streamline deployments and reduce manual work. Exploring and evaluating emerging technologies, including AI-powered operations tools and advanced monitoring capabilities, to enhance system monitoring, alerting, and overall operational efficiency is also a key part of this role. You will ensure cloud operations comply with all relevant security standards, data protection policies, and regulatory requirements, implementing appropriate security controls and monitoring mechanisms in coordination with Information Security to protect cloud infrastructure and data. Additionally, you will oversee governance processes such as access management, change control, and documentation of cloud configurations, ensuring alignment with corporate IT policies and audit requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. Eight or more years of progressive experience in IT infrastructure and/or cloud operations are required, including at least three years in a leadership role overseeing cloud or infrastructure teams. In-depth, hands-on experience managing and supporting large-scale cloud environments on major public cloud platforms such as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform in production is essential. Strong knowledge of cloud architecture, virtualisation, networking, storage, and security best practices for cloud and hybrid environments is expected. Proven experience implementing and managing CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CloudFormation, and automation scripts to deploy and maintain cloud resources is also necessary. A solid understanding of system monitoring, logging, and incident response processes in a 24x7 operational context, along with demonstrated ability to develop disaster recovery and business continuity plans for cloud services, is highly valued. Strong leadership and team management skills, with a track record of effectively leading technical teams or projects, are crucial. Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, are needed to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders, with the ability to work cross-functionally and coordinate with vendors or partners as needed. Comfort with exploring and utilising emerging technologies such as AI-driven operations tools and intelligent automation to improve processes and outcomes is important, alongside a proactive mindset that embraces continuous learning and innovation in cloud operations practices. Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services including Apigee and Cloud Run is preferred. Familiarity with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) or Oracle Fusion applications in a cloud context is considered an asset. Hands-on knowledge of BigCommerce, Shopify, or similar eCommerce cloud platforms is also beneficial, as is proficiency with modern observability and performance monitoring tools such as Dynatrace or Datadog.
