This position is responsible for a portfolio of 75-150 prospects, aiming for 20-25 solicitations and raising a minimum average of $1+ million each year. Working in partnership with senior management, the Associate Director facilitates maximum private and public sector support, developing and implementing comprehensive plans for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift prospects and donors.
The role ensures appropriate donor recognition, acknowledgement, and stewardship programmes are in place and oversees the generation of donor and prospect solicitation materials and correspondence, alongside some administrative duties. The position operates with significant independence and discretion in donor negotiations and policy administration, reporting to a Senior Associate Director, Director/Assistant Dean, or Executive Director of Development.
Develop and manage a portfolio of 75-150 major gift prospects, conducting 100-200 face-to-face visits annually for discovery, cultivation, and solicitation strategies for gifts of $50,000 and up. Annual benchmarks for these meetings are expected.
Implement comprehensive plans for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift prospects and donors, effectively managing these relationships. Generate proposals and collaborate with donors to secure gifts for priority projects, developing and executing strategies to close 20-25 major gift solicitations annually.
Ensure the implementation of appropriate donor recognition, acknowledgement, and stewardship programmes. Oversee the creation of donor and prospect solicitation materials and correspondence. This role also involves advising on and ensuring proper interpretation and implementation of academic and fiscal policies for fundraising, senior administrators, and development staff.
The Associate Director participates in decisions regarding planning, organisation, staff utilisation, selection, and performance reviews, and may mentor junior development staff.
Candidates must possess a university degree in a relevant discipline, coupled with a minimum of five years of related experience in fundraising, alumni relations, or advancement, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A proven commitment to respecting diverse perspectives, including those in conflict with one’s own, is essential, alongside a dedication to enhancing one’s awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
A graduate degree or an undergraduate degree in commerce, marketing, or economics is preferred. Applicants should demonstrate proven experience in major-gift fundraising and be skilled in strategy development. Thorough knowledge of the university environment and academic structure is an asset, as is experience working with a centralised fundraising system.
The successful candidate will exhibit the ability to work independently while consistently exercising sound judgement. Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, strategic thinking, and conflict resolution abilities are required. Strong conceptual abilities combined with high attention to detail are also necessary.
The role demands the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously under imposed deadlines, formulate strategic plans, and possess effective verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills are crucial for liaising with major donors, corporate executives, and senior university administration.
Proven ability to work with the University’s most senior donors to advance its mission, along with tact, diplomacy, discretion, and sound judgement, are all highly valued. Computer proficiency, particularly in a MS Windows environment and Microsoft Office, is also required.
