About the Assistant Professor Role at UBC Dentistry

The UBC Faculty of Dentistry is actively seeking an exceptional scholar to join its Department of Oral Biological and Medical Sciences as an Assistant Professor, supported by the UBC President’s Academic Excellence Initiative. This pivotal role aims to solidify UBC's standing as a leader in oral health research across Canada, aligning with the National Oral Health Research Strategy. The successful candidate will be instrumental in advancing research efforts into oral and systemic microbiomes and their complex interactions with the host. This faculty position offers a unique opportunity to develop and lead an independent research program, contributing significantly to existing research and teaching excellence within the department and the broader university. The anticipated start date for this ongoing position is Fall 2026, with a starting salary of $150,000.00, negotiable based on experience and credentials.

Research and Teaching Responsibilities

As an Assistant Professor, the successful candidate will be expected to employ advanced methodologies in oral health research, including microbiological omics methods such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. Collaboration with existing research themes within the Faculty of Dentistry, such as Craniofacial Development and Preclinical Disease Models, and Matrix Biology, Infection, Immunity, and Biomaterials Research, is highly encouraged. A significant aspect of this role involves supervising the research of trainees at all academic levels, from undergraduate to post-doctoral. Furthermore, the Assistant Professor will contribute to the Faculty’s mandate to educate future oral health professionals by teaching foundational and oral microbiology to DMD, dental hygiene, and graduate students. While not strictly required, a DMD/DDS degree or dental hygiene degree is highly desirable, and expertise in cariology is considered a significant asset. Applicants should present a strong record of independent, consistent, and recent research productivity, evidenced by first or senior author publications in established journals within the past three years. Evidence of previous grant or salary awards will be favourably considered. The ideal candidate will be an emerging leader with strong interpersonal skills, capable of fostering trust through a collegial approach and eager to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students across the Department, Faculty, and the wider UBC community.
