About the Opportunity
This in-person position at the University of Alberta supports the Accessible Spaces project, with an end date of August 28, 2026. We are seeking highly detail-oriented University of Alberta students passionate about accessibility. The role involves approximately 20 hours per week, conducting standardised accessibility audits across various campus locations. These audits will contribute to enhancing accessible experiences for students, staff, and visitors with disabilities on our campuses. While the majority of auditing will occur on North Campus, some team members will also conduct audits at Campus Saint-Jean, Augustana Campus in Camrose, South Campus, and Enterprise Square.
Your Responsibilities
You will work both individually and as part of a team to complete accessibility audits for frequently used buildings across the University of Alberta's Edmonton and Camrose campuses. Your tasks include collecting detailed, highly accurate, and replicable measurements of campus spaces using tools such as a tape measure, camera, and Google Forms. You will help create accurate overviews of key accessibility and safety features, as well as barriers, within high-use University of Alberta buildings. Additionally, you will support the collection of building and pathway information to assist in creating an accessible campus navigation map and identify barriers not captured in the standard audit.
What You'll Bring
Successful candidates will have completed at least two semesters of post-secondary schooling at a University of Alberta campus within the last two years. You will demonstrate dedication, knowledge, or experience related to the accessibility and inaccessibility of the built environment, evidenced through schooling, employment, volunteer activities, or lived experience. Exceptional attention to detail and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a team are essential. Excellent verbal and written English communication skills are required, along with experience using Google Forms, Google Sheets, and Google Docs. While alternative, adapted methods are welcomed, the role requires some physical capacities, including the ability to spend 4-5 hours per day walking or moving across campus, using a tape measure or adaptive measuring tool for various measurements, and reading room numbers or navigation signs. Significant assets include prior experience conducting accessibility audits, formal training or education in accessibility, familiarity with navigating Augustana Campus or Campus Saint-Jean, and spoken and written fluency in French.
