The Thermal Facilities Engineer will be responsible for a range of critical duties that ensure the efficient and compliant operation of our facilities. A core aspect of this role involves developing strong relationships with Operations and other internal teams, fostering a collaborative environment to solve operational issues and enhance facility performance. You will initiate and participate in comprehensive engineering and economic studies aimed at process improvement and optimization, ensuring that solutions are both effective and economically sound. Managing engineering changes from conception through completion, adhering strictly to Canadian Natural’s Management of Change (MOC) process, is paramount. Furthermore, the role involves managing capital projects from initiation to closeout using Canadian Natural’s Project Management Methodology (PMM), ensuring projects are delivered right. Regular travelling to site for day and multi-day visits is a requirement, facilitating direct engagement with facilities and operational teams. This position also necessitates working with regulatory agencies such as AER and ABSA to ensure all facilities remain in full compliance with applicable codes, guidelines, directives, and regulations, upholding our commitment to responsible operations.
To excel in this Thermal Facilities Engineer role, candidates must bring a robust background complemented by specific qualifications and attributes. A Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical preferred) is required, along with a minimum of five years of experience in an industrial setting. Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) designation in good standing or eligibility for registration with APEGA is essential, demonstrating a commitment to engineering integrity and professional standards. Strong communication and collaboration skills are vital for building consensus across various teams and engaging effectively with diverse people. The ideal candidate accepts ownership, is highly accountable, and consistently delivers on commitments, showcasing a proactive and results-oriented approach. Solid organizational and analytical skills are necessary to manage several complex projects concurrently, ensuring all aspects of the process are handled efficiently. Additional positive attributes include field-based operational or engineering support experience, particularly in facility optimization and troubleshooting. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and specialized engineering software applications, such as HYSYS, is highly valued. Experience in facilities process safety through methodologies like Process Hazard Analysis (HAZOP, 'What if') and the Management of Change (MOC) process is also a significant asset.
