About the Role
Midland Transport is seeking an experienced and results-driven Terminal Manager to lead its large pickup and delivery (P&D) transport terminal in Dorval, Quebec. Reporting to the Director, Operations – Quebec, this role is accountable for delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations while achieving financial and customer performance targets.
The Terminal Manager drives operational excellence through strong employee engagement, clear communication, and the effective use of key business metrics related to cost control, safety, service quality, and asset utilisation.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership: Manage all terminal operations including dispatch, dock, and P&D functions to ensure efficient daily freight movements. Ensure optimal routing, scheduling, and resource allocation to meet service commitments. Partner with sales and customer service teams to address customer needs and resolve escalations. Drive continuous improvement initiatives in partnership with peers across the Midland network to enhance productivity and reduce operational inefficiencies.
Employee Engagement: Foster a culture focused on teamwork, accountability, respect, and continuous improvement. Lead, coach, and develop frontline supervisors and staff across unionised and non-unionised roles. Maintain positive labour relations through effective communication and consistent application of collective agreements.
Financial & Cost Management: Manage terminal operating costs including labour, third-party cartage, overtime, asset usage, and maintenance. Monitor and achieve budget targets, on-time delivery rates, freight claim rates, and cost per shipment metrics. Identify and implement cost control strategies while maintaining service quality.
Safety & Compliance: Champion a strong safety culture aligned with JDI and Midland standards and policies. Ensure full compliance with all hours-of-work and health and safety legislation. Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence in partnership with the health, safety, and environment team.
What You'll Bring
A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in transportation, logistics, or courier operations is required. Post-secondary education in business, logistics, or a related field is preferred; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Proven experience managing large, unionised workforces in a terminal or distribution centre environment is essential.
Candidates should possess a strong understanding of routing and dispatch operations, terminal and dock operations, and KPI-driven performance management. Demonstrated experience leading teams in a fast-paced environment, along with a proven ability to manage operational performance, cost, and service outcomes, is necessary. Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills are also key.
Fluency in both French and English is required, with advanced proficiency in both languages. This includes 50% of communications in English (meetings with head office and managers across other provinces, reports, emails) and 50% in French (communications, training sessions, and meetings with team members and Quebec colleagues).
The role involves a fast-paced, operational environment with a regular presence on the terminal floor and availability to support operations outside of standard business hours as required. Interaction with drivers, dockworkers, supervisors, office staff, and external stakeholders is also a regular part of this role.
