Key Responsibilities of the Digital Media Instructor The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing and delivering this introductory digital media practice course. Responsibilities include designing appropriate assignments and assessments tailored for students embarking on their digital media journey, and actively supporting students in the creation of short digital media projects. A core aspect of this teaching role involves seamlessly integrating critical media studies concepts with hands-on production activities, ensuring a holistic learning experience. The instructor must also ensure that all course materials and assignments meticulously address important considerations such as accessibility, copyright, consent, attribution, privacy, and ethical production practices. Furthermore, the role involves managing course materials effectively through Canvas and coordinating with teaching assistants when applicable, culminating in the evaluation of student work and submission of final grades.
Ideal Candidate Profile and Essential Experience The University of Alberta is particularly interested in applicants who can expertly bridge critical media studies with practical digital media production experience. Candidates should possess graduate-level training or equivalent professional experience in fields such as media studies, communication studies, digital media, media production, journalism, design, or digital humanities. Demonstrated teaching experience at the postsecondary level is essential, or equivalent experience leading workshops, professional media instruction, or community media education initiatives. Crucially, applicants must have demonstrated practical experience in digital media production, particularly within audio, video, platform-based, or multimodal media. The ability to teach introductory production skills to students with varying prior experience levels is vital, alongside a capacity to connect practical production skills with critical approaches to media, platforms, audiences, representation, accessibility, ethics, and social context. Familiarity with contemporary, lightweight production workflows using accessible tools like smartphones and commonly available editing software is highly valued.
