This is a part-time Sustainability Intern position with the University of Alberta's Sustainability Council, located in Edmonton, Alberta. The role has an end date of April 30, 2027. It offers a hybrid work model, combining remote work with in-person presence at the North Campus in Edmonton. This internship is designed for current University of Alberta undergraduate or graduate students, requiring approximately 12 hours of work per week, with some flexibility. It is well-suited for students managing a course load of no more than three or four courses per semester.
Interns will gain valuable, real-world experience in public and stakeholder engagement, event planning, project management, program evaluation, team leadership, marketing and communications, and research. Work hours are typically scheduled Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend shifts depending on availability. A flexible schedule and work location are offered, except for required staff meetings, team meetings, office hours, and event delivery. An in-office workstation is provided, and final schedules are determined collaboratively.
Key Responsibilities
Interns will support the University of Alberta's submissions to key sustainability rankings, including the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and Quacquarelli Symonds Sustainability Rankings. This involves conducting independent research, reviewing past submissions, and collecting, organising, and analysing data.
A key part of the role is assisting in the planning, promotion, delivery, and evaluation of various events, such as Week of Welcome, Lecture Series, Open House, International Week, Sustainable Development Goals Month, and the Celebrate Sustainability Awards. Interns will also lead or support promotional activities, including postering, classroom presentations, outreach tabling, networking, and preparing event materials.
The position includes contributing to project-based tasks for diverse Sustainability Council programs, projects, and initiatives, which may be academic or non-academic. Interns will further support the Sustainability Council's marketing and communications efforts by drafting blog and social media posts, creating website content, designing with Canva, and assisting with photography and videography. The exact portfolio and work plan will be tailored to the intern's skills, interests, and the Council's programming needs.

Candidates must be current University of Alberta undergraduate or graduate students. Required qualifications include demonstrated experience with data collection, analysis, collation, and processing, along with a proven ability to coordinate events, programs, or projects with professionalism and reliability. Strong organisational and time management skills are essential for meeting competing deadlines.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with keen attention to detail, are necessary. Applicants should possess a positive, solutions-oriented approach to all work and deliverables, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team. Receptiveness to feedback, self-driven motivation, and a commitment to personal and professional growth are also key. High proficiency with spreadsheets like MS Excel and Google Sheets, and document software such as MS Word and Google Docs, is required. An interest in advancing and learning about sustainability or the Sustainable Development Goals, both locally and globally, is important.
While not required, preferred qualifications include experience developing promotional content and designs, bilingualism (proficient in English and French), and previous involvement in campus sustainability, such as volunteering with the Office of Sustainability, Sustainability Council, or Sustain SU. Knowledge of all Sustainability Council programs is also considered an asset.
