As a key member of the OMNI team, the Video Journalist in Ottawa will be responsible for identifying and comprehensively covering Parliamentary, National, and International news stories, ensuring their suitability for all language OMNI newscasts. This involves compiling essential video footage, meticulously writing scripts, and crafting preliminary paper edits for various national and regional language teams to produce within their shows. You will actively source, book, and feed in-person English and third-language clips from Members of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers, and Senators within the Parliamentary precinct. A crucial aspect of this role is to discover original stories within the Ottawa region and beyond that authentically reflect and resonate with Canada’s vibrant ethno-cultural communities. You will be expected to shoot, edit, write, report, and occasionally present news stories across all platforms, including OMNI’s national newscasts and regional shows. The ability to present both scripted and unscripted coverage, live and recorded, as required by OMNI news teams, is essential. Furthermore, you will organize material and write engaging, relevant, and concise news stories under tight deadlines, adhering to prescribed editorial style and format standards. Collaboration with a diverse team of innovative journalists at OMNI and CityNews is paramount, alongside building a strong network of contacts. Ensure to regularly check for trending stories on social media to maintain relevance.
The ideal candidate for this Video Journalist position brings proven experience in operating a video camera, alongside strong writing, interviewing, and editing capabilities. You must be adaptable, demonstrating resilience and resourcefulness to overcome obstacles and consistently produce compelling news stories. A keen attention to detail and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment are crucial for success in this dynamic role. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential for working effectively with diverse teams. Fluency in the digital news space, coupled with an ability to identify trending stories on social media, will be a significant asset. Experience with live news and field production is also highly valued, complementing a broadcast journalism diploma or equivalent experience.
