The Real World Evidence Unit at the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is seeking a proactive, collaborative, and analytically driven Health Economist. This role focuses on generating high-quality, decision-grade research using real-world health system data to inform critical health system decisions.
As a core member of provincial and national consortia, including ARWEC and ADTEC, the unit collaborates with partners to ensure health decisions are grounded in robust, real-world evidence. This position offers an initial one-year appointment with the possibility of extension and can be either hybrid or fully remote.
The successful candidate will lead economic evaluations and applied research studies, leveraging real-world health system data to inform clinical, policy, and funding decisions across Alberta and beyond. The unit fosters a collaborative team culture, practices inclusivity and respect, and supports a flexible work environment.
Key Responsibilities
The Health Economist will design and conduct comprehensive economic evaluations, including cost-effectiveness, cost-utility, and budget impact analyses, for drugs and technologies using current methodologies. This involves conducting analyses with real-world data to determine resource use, healthcare costs, and incremental costs through robust methods.
Key responsibilities also include developing study protocols and contributing to research proposals. The role requires translating research findings into accessible reports, presentations, and publications for diverse audiences, including technical experts, policymakers, and the general public.
Collaboration with stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams is essential. The successful candidate will also apply critical appraisal skills to interrogate existing economic models and cost-effectiveness submissions.
What You'll Bring
Candidates should possess an MSc in Health Economics, Economics, Epidemiology, or a related field, along with a minimum of five years of progressive experience in health economics, health services research, or real-world evidence research. A PhD is considered a valuable asset.
Demonstrated expertise in health economic evaluation is required, encompassing costing analyses, cost-effectiveness analysis, budget impact analysis, and the application of real-world data to support healthcare decision-making. Proven success in managing complex, multi-stakeholder research projects and experience with administrative or clinical data, including familiarity with data access and governance processes, are also essential.
Strong scientific writing skills are crucial, evidenced by contributions to peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, reimbursement submissions, or policy documents. Applicants must also have advanced knowledge of quantitative research methods, study design, and health economic methodologies, alongside experience analysing and interpreting large real-world healthcare datasets.
Excellent organisation and project management abilities are expected, coupled with proficient writing, communication, and presentation skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and statistical software such as R, SAS, or STATA is necessary, with experience in health economic modelling considered an asset.
