This in-person role at the University of Alberta's North Campus in Edmonton involves the assembly of various dental kits and the thorough cleaning and disinfection of dental materials and equipment used across the School of Dentistry clinics. The Dental Materials Reprocessing Clerk is also responsible for ordering, receiving, labelling, and storing supplies in the Material Management Reprocessing Centre, ensuring compliance with ADA&C, provincial, and federal hazardous material regulations. This position requires diligent monitoring of expiry dates and rotation of perishable supplies to maintain optimised inventory levels.
This is a recurring position with inactive periods, typically 5-6 weeks, aligned with the School’s operational requirements for the Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. These inactive periods may occur in late April to late August, a week in November, mid-December to early January, and a week in February. Assigned shifts may fall between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM, Monday to Friday.
Your Responsibilities
You will process all carts received from dental clinics daily, ensuring effective and efficient clinic operations through cleaning and disinfection. Key duties include supporting the sterilisation unit with inspecting and packaging items during peak times and covering absences, accurately distributing supplies to departments and students, and monitoring inventory to ensure adequate stock for all dental kits. You will prepare and assemble supplies, materials, and instrumentation according to School of Dentistry guidelines, ensuring all sundry carts are appropriately stocked.
This role involves receiving and transporting metro carts between clinical units, Central Sterilisation, the Material Management Centre, and dispensaries. You will assist in various clinical areas such as the Dispensary, Sterilisation, and Simulation Lab as needed. You will also work with the Materials Management Supervisor to maintain inventory control systems and databases for equipment and ordering supplies, handle material and equipment requests, and report problems regarding instrument or material availability. Utilising Axium for sterilising and barcoding instrumentation and cassettes, you will store and rotate sterilised items as per defined protocols.
A critical aspect of the role is infection prevention and control. You will process non-critical items from dirty metro carts, disinfect all non-critical containers, materials, and equipment following IPC protocols, and adhere to Standard Precautions, including maintaining the schedule for cart delivery and retrieval. You will follow Standard Operating Procedures for the cleaning, inspecting, packaging, and sterilisation of dental instrumentation, prepare daily dental and disinfecting solutions, and comply with WHMIS and Biohazard Waste Management protocols. Maintaining current skills in WHMIS, Infection Control, Biohazard Waste Management, and Quality Assurance is essential. You will also disinfect metro carts, assist with cart washing, perform basic hand washing, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and promote proper aseptic technique and equipment maintenance.
Additionally, you may participate in student or guest orientation and demonstrations as required. You will ensure equipment is operating and maintained according to manufacturer’s instructions, reporting damage or malfunctions to Equipment Technicians and monitoring incoming instruments for wear.

Required qualifications include a Grade 12 Diploma. Preferred assets include current WHMIS training, knowledge of dental procedures, materials, and equipment, and an understanding of Infection Control Protocols. Experience with inventory or supply management, including familiarity with inventory management software like AxiUm, is beneficial for tracking inventory and creating reports. Proficiency in MS Office applications and/or Google Mail and Google Suite is also an asset.
