The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (grant tenure-track) within the esteemed Division of Respiratory Medicine, part of the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. The UBC Department of Medicine is the largest Department in the Faculty of Medicine, comprising over 1,200 faculty and staff across 18 divisions throughout British Columbia. It is dedicated to providing excellence in research, teaching, and clinical services related to adult diseases, ensuring the success of its learners and faculty, and contributing significantly to the health of the Province of British Columbia.
The Division of Respiratory Medicine is an internationally recognized group of faculty, primarily located at major teaching hospitals affiliated with the UBC Faculty of Medicine. With a strong focus on lung and heart research, the division boasts an international reputation for excellence across the four Canadian Institutes of Health Research Pillars, from basic research to population health. The successful academic scientist will be based at the Centre for Lung Health, benefiting from strong connections with the Data Sciences and Health Research Cluster, the Data Science Institute, the Academy of Translational Medicine, and the Legacy for Airway Health, as well as external partners like the BC Centre for Disease Control and the BC Ministry of Health.
What you'll do
Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Medicine through the Head of the Division of Respiratory Medicine, the incumbent will be a respirologist tasked with leading a unique and groundbreaking research program. This program will target critical gaps within the focus areas of the Centre for Lung Health, demanding visionary and broad-thinking study design and evaluation. The role requires an early career track record demonstrating elite productivity and a high likelihood for ongoing success and growth into leadership of a world-class team. Collaboration with patients, community groups, and colleagues is essential to advance knowledge that positively impacts respiratory health.
- Lead a unique and groundbreaking research program targeting gaps in any of the areas of focus in the Centre for Lung Health.
- Participate actively in the teaching activities of the Department of Medicine.
- Provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners.
- Provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.
- Work collaboratively in diverse groups to bring forward strategic initiatives for the Department and the Faculty.
- Contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity.
Skills and experience
- Hold an MD with subspecialty training in Respiratory Medicine.
- Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, in anticipation of clinical responsibilities within Vancouver Coastal Health.
- Evidence of innovative and productive scientific research.
- Demonstrated ability in teaching and scholarly activity.
- Demonstrated willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
- Commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
