The City of Vancouver is seeking an Activity Leader in Vancouver to plan, implement, and evaluate diverse cultural, recreational, educational, and social activities for community members. This role involves leading groups and encouraging participation among various clients. Top requirements include completion of Grade 10 with related experience, demonstrating the ability to coordinate a wide range of activities for people of diverse needs.
As an Activity Leader with the City of Vancouver, you will play a vital role at the Gathering Place, planning, implementing, and evaluating a variety of cultural, recreational, educational, and social activities for diverse community members. This position requires a strong ability to organize and actively participate in daily activities for Downtown South residents, leading groups and providing basic skill instruction to centre clients. You will encourage participation and help develop associated social skills, ensuring equitable access to engaging programs. The role also involves assisting recreation staff in planning, promoting, and supervising drop-in programs and special events, as well as initiating and leading regular trips, including overnight camping excursions. Your knowledge of community services and resources will be essential for providing information and referrals to patrons, further supporting the needs of our vancouver community. Maintaining centre equipment and facilities is also a key responsibility, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all participants in all recreational activities. You will also deal effectively with problem situations, including emergencies, which may entail administering First Aid and liaising with ambulance and police services when necessary, ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved in community activities.
To thrive in this Activity Leader position, candidates should possess a completion of Grade 10 combined with some related experience working with similar client groups or in recreation activities related to the work assigned. Related knowledge in Creative Arts and/or Recreation is considered a valuable asset. Demonstrated ability to develop, coordinate, and implement a wide range of activities—including recreational, educational, social, and cultural programs—for people of various ages and diverse backgrounds is crucial. A working knowledge of the Downtown South area, its agencies, services, and resources, along with an understanding of the recreational interests and social skills of facility clients, is highly beneficial. The ability to maintain control and exercise discipline tactfully and effectively with difficult clients, while providing encouragement and support, is also essential. Furthermore, candidates must be willing to obtain a standard First Aid Certificate (training provided) and be prepared to deal with First Aid emergencies. A Class 5 Driver’s License is an asset, and a Police Record Check is a mandatory requirement for this role within the City of Vancouver. This role requires a strong ability to maintain records related to the work and ensure that centre rules and standards of conduct are observed.
