Position Summary

The City of Ottawa's Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services department is dedicated to the daily operation of facilities and the delivery of diverse recreation programs and cultural services. This includes managing recreation venues, developing policies, and ensuring all operations are customer-centric and efficient. The department delivers community recreation programs across Ottawa, encompassing aquatic, sport, and physical activity programming for all ages, with a specific focus on addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities and population segments who may experience barriers to accessing recreation services.

As a Youth & Child Care Worker, you will play a direct role in these vital services, specifically working with children and youth who have attention deficit, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, and other learning disabilities. Your work will involve implementing positive reinforcement and social skills training programs to support their development and inclusion.

Your Qualifications and Expertise

To thrive in this role, you will bring a combination of formal education, practical experience, and essential certifications, along with a genuine passion for working with youth in recreation settings.

• Completion of college diploma or university degree in Recreation, Child Care/Youth Worker, Kinesiology or Physical Education
• Minimum of 2 years of experience working with multi-cultural youth aged 12 and up

• Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates
• Crisis Prevention/Intervention training certificate
• AODA Customer Service/IASR Training

• Legislation protecting rights of special needs client populations
• Client care best practices
• Health and Safety legislation, policies, and procedures
• City of Ottawa and Parks & Recreation Branch Policies and Procedures
• Relevant standards of practice
• Knowledge of learning disabilities and appropriate intervention strategies, social skill developments and task analysis processes
