About the role

The Health Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (HEDI) hub serves as a centre of expertise within Public Health Ottawa. It supports the development of organisational capacités in anti-racist and anti-oppression practices and compétences, as well as the elaboration of equity-focused policies, practices, and strategies that contribute to improving health equity outcomes.

As a Spécialiste de l'équité en santé, you will be a key part of the HEDI leadership team, contributing to the strategic direction and operational implementation of equity-focused initiatives across the organisation. This role is crucial for advancing the City of Ottawa's commitment to equitable santé for all residents.

Day-to-day

In this dynamic role, your daily responsibilities will involve a range of strategic and operational tasks aimed at fostering a more equitable environment. Key activities include:

  • Developing and implementing un cadre de lutte contre le racisme et l’oppression that acknowledges systemic racism and promotes équité, equitable access to care, and improved health outcomes for equity-deserving populations.
  • Collaborating with internal and external partners to launch and support des initiatives based sur les principes d’équité raciale that contribute to measurable improvements des résultats de santé.

Who we're looking for

To excel in this role, candidates should possess a strong educational background, significant experience, and a comprehensive understanding des principes d'équité en santé.

Education and Experience:

  • University degree obtained after four (4) years of study in public health, public policy, nursing, health education, human resource management, social sciences, mediation, conflict resolution, or a related discipline.
  • At least five (5) years of direct experience related to public health, health policy, health education, and/or racial health équité, and/or the development and implementation of equity and diversity policies and programs, combined with direct experience in client support for the delivery of diversity training programs.
  • Lived knowledge and experience as a racialized person are required.

Knowledge:

  • Public health practice, community engagement principles, social and economic determinants de la santé, and racial health equity principles.
  • Ontario Human Rights Code, Canadian Human Rights Act, and employment equity legislation.
  • Anti-racism and anti-oppression frameworks and theories (e.g., Critical Race Theory).
  • Challenges faced by equity-seeking groups dans les secteurs de l’emploi et des services.
  • Importance and benefits of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Understanding of systemic and structural inequalities and the impact of racism sur la santé de la population.

  • Capacité à élaborer et à animer des présentations sur la lutte contre le racisme et l’oppression à l’attention de publics divers.
  • Capacité à entreprendre des recherches et des analyses sur les politiques.
  • Knowledge of strategic planning and management principles and techniques.
  • Plan, develop, organise, and implement short- and long-term projects and strategies in an environment where priorities frequently change.
  • Ability to plan, organise, and execute assignments, meet deadlines, prepare reports and recommendations for senior management review.
  • Communicate effectively and persuasively, orally and in writing, with organisational staff at all levels, as well as with representatives of external organisations.
  • Present comprehensive information on diversity, inclusion, equity, and human rights to various audiences, including developing and delivering briefing sessions and training programs to staff at all levels.
  • Proven experience in implementing strategies to increase inclusive capacité and identify opportunities for collaboration within a team to develop and implement initiatives that encourage cultural change.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and commitment to equity and human rights issues, based on lived experience.
