Reporting to the Power Distribution Department Shift Team Lead, the Power Systems Electrician will support operations, maintenance, and projects in high voltage transmission and distribution systems throughout Canadian Natural Albian Sands, located in Fort McMurray, Alberta. This is a safety-sensitive position with a 7x7, 12-hour shift schedule, Tuesday to Monday. The application deadline is June 2, 2026.
Your Responsibilities
As a Power Systems Electrician, you will collaborate within a small power distribution department, demonstrating a strong, self-motivated work ethic. Key duties include operating and maintaining the onsite 5Kv, 25Kv, and 72Kv power distribution system. This involves isolating, permitting, and conducting regular shift rounds.
What You'll Bring
The ideal candidate is a certified Journeyman Electrician with at least 10 years of experience in an oil site environment. A minimum of 5 years in a leadership position, such as Foreman or Assistant Foreman, is also required. You will possess strong technical capabilities, including high voltage troubleshooting to diagnose faults and use advanced electrical indicators on high voltage systems.
Proficiency in switch operation, specifically with 72kV Pascor and 25kV Omniruptor switches, including executing complex switching orders, is essential. Experience with hot stick procedures, safely utilising live-line tools on live electrical systems with voltages up to 25kV, is necessary. You will be familiar with encroachment protocols, issuing and managing high voltage encroachments, specifically following Albian and ATCO guidelines.
Responding to power system trips, system failures, and high-risk high voltage incidents, along with enforcing strict high voltage safe work practices, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and specialised site permitting, forms a crucial part of the role. Familiarity or proficiency with testing equipment such as Testrano, Omicron, Megger/Ductor, Hi-Pot (AC/DC), Ground Grid, and Battery sets (Load Bank, impedance, gravity) is expected, along with the ability to proficiently operate crimp/Hypress tools up to 40 Tons.
You should also be familiar with testing power transformers, including winding resistance, turns ratio, Tan Delta, SFRA, auxiliary functions, and oil sampling. The ability to operate and maintain circuit breakers, servicing and testing vacuum and SF6 breakers ranging from 5 kV to 72 kV using Cibano analysers for timing tests and Ductor/Megger checks, is required. Programming and testing microprocessor-based relays, including feeder, transformer, generator, motor, and ground fault types, is another key skill. Finally, you will be able to terminate and test cables (3M, Raychem, Pfisterer), CTs, VTs, NGRs, and ground grids.
Certifications in 3M Termination, Raychem Termination, and experience vulcanising trailing cables would be considered advantageous. All candidates applying to Canadian Natural must have legal authorisation to work in Canada with no restrictions.
